After a long day at work, you will want to relax, lounge around while the TV is on, and have your cat sit on you which always ends up happening. You love how your cat snuggles up to you but you cannot help but wonder why your cat enjoys doing that. You want to know more about what is behind their habits of sitting on you. Let’s go over some of the reasons that your cat likes to sit on you.

Cats Love The Warmth You Give Off

The fact of the matter is that cats enjoy warm settings and let’s face it, your lap is that warm setting that they like. It brings them comfort and they feel safe in warm environments. Therefore, if you are sitting on the sofa or the family room chair, then your lap will generate heat because it is in a warmer setting. Your cat will know this and crave it, and that is one reason that your cat will end up on your lap.

Cats Want The Connection With You

If cats like you, as you would hope they would if you are their owner, they crave your connection. Even though cats are independent creatures, they still have their favorite humans and you are one of them. Therefore, they want to be with you and want your connection which is why they will sit on you. They want you to pet them, as they think back to when they were babies when their mothers groomed them. They will also knead, which takes them back to their first days of life when they were doing that to get more milk from their mothers.

Cats Feel Safe

If your cat is snuggling with you on your lap, they do it because it makes them feel safe. You make them feel safe so therefore, when they want reassurance that they are secure, they will go right onto your lap. You will also have the inclination to pet them which reinforces their feelings of safety.

Cats Like Your Smell

Cats will stay with their favorite person if the clothing they are wearing smells like them. Therefore, if you have the smell that you carry, then your cat will like it. However, if you have been around other cats such as being at the cat shelter or a friend’s home where there is another cat – your cat will not sit on your lap then. That means your feline friend will avoid you in that case.

Your Cats Like Your Clothing

Why Do Cats Sit On You?

If you are wearing cotton or comforting flannel clothing, then that is going to attract your feline friend. Your feline friend is picky about the clothing you are wearing. If you are wearing a bathing suit because you are ready to go swimming and you are sitting on the sofa as you wait, don’t expect your cat to sit on you then. A bathing suit will not make your cat want to cuddle up with you.

Your Cat Trusts You

Cats don’t trust very easily and if you have your feline friend sitting on you, then you can take it as a clear sign that they trust you. They want to be with those they trust. Therefore, you can take it as a compliment.

At the end of the day, when your cat is sitting on you, you can see it as a wonderful bonding experience. Your cat will love the experience of being with you. And when you are petting your cat and they are purring, then you see that your cat is in the ultimate bliss.
